Summary

GoldenEye: Rogue Agent is a first-person shooter developed by EA Los Angeles and published by Electronic Arts. In the game, players assume the identity of Jack Hunter, a former MI6 operative who is brought back into action by Auric Goldfinger, a key figure in a powerful, unnamed criminal group inspired by Ian Fleming's SPECTRE. Hunter is tasked with eliminating his enemy, Dr. No. The game also features appearances by several other characters from the Bond franchise, such as Pussy Galore, Oddjob, Xenia Onatopp, and Francisco Scaramanga. Although it shares its name with the 1995 film and the 1997 video game, GoldenEye: Rogue Agent is not connected to either. In this version of the story, the main character earns the nickname "GoldenEye" after losing his eye and being fitted with a golden cybernetic replacement.

Storyline

At the beginning of the game, a message from M (director of MI6) states: "Three years ago, during a mission, the agent was critically injured in a confrontation with Dr. No and lost the use of his right eye. Overcome by a desire for revenge, he often turns to extreme violence and is no longer suitable for duty with MI6." According to the message, Dr. No shot the agent in the right eye during the mission. Three years after the incident that cost the agent his eye, he undergoes a test in a holographic simulation where he is partnered with 007 to prevent Auric Goldfinger, a member of a criminal syndicate, from detonating a suitcase nuclear bomb at Fort Knox. He fails the mission and is directly blamed for the "death" of 007. Charged with "reckless violence," he is dismissed from MI6. As he exits the agency's headquarters, he is seen reading a recruitment offer from Goldfinger. The agent accepts Goldfinger's offer and becomes his enforcer, meeting him at Auric Enterprises, where Goldfinger's researchers have developed a weapon called the OMEN (Organic Mass Energy Neutralizer), which emits energy capable of disintegrating organic matter at an atomic level. To eliminate Dr. No, a rival within the criminal organization, he is equipped with a golden cybernetic eye designed by Francisco Scaramanga, another high-ranking member of Goldfinger's group (which gives him the codename "GoldenEye"). Scaramanga later upgrades the eye, beginning with MRI vision. In Hong Kong, GoldenEye must acquire a sniper rifle with an EM hack feature to eliminate Dr. No. At the Midas Casino, GoldenEye must reach the vault (a location also used in multiplayer) to protect the OMEN using a magnetic polarity shield. At the Hoover Dam, GoldenEye must destroy the dam and defeat Xenia Onatopp. GoldenEye also throws Oddjob off a railing into a pit inside the dam after he betrays and attacks GoldenEye for unknown reasons. At The Octopus, GoldenEye must download navigation coordinates to Crab Key (Dr. No's base) using the force field generated by his golden eye. He is then sent to Crab Key, where he faces Dr. No. During their fight, GoldenEye uses his mechanical eye to sabotage the island's nuclear reactor, electrocuting Dr. No. After No's death, Goldfinger contacts GoldenEye and claims he is too dangerous to remain alive, revealing he had earlier instructed GoldenEye to activate a program that would disable the Lair's defense grid. Goldfinger then announces his plan to take over the Lair and leaves GoldenEye to die in the coming nuclear meltdown. GoldenEye, however, escapes in Dr. No's osprey just before the reactor overloads and the island is destroyed in a massive explosion. GoldenEye returns to the Lair to confront Goldfinger. Pussy Galore meets with GoldenEye and tells him that Goldfinger has used the OMEN to eliminate most of the Lair's guards and has taken control. Scaramanga provides GoldenEye's eye with a computer virus that can overload the OMEN. GoldenEye battles through the Lair, implanting the virus along the way, eventually reaching the location where Goldfinger and the OMEN are. Goldfinger traps GoldenEye in a chamber he claims will soon run out of oxygen. The virus then activates the OMEN, causing it to explode in a surge of energy, killing Goldfinger and his forces. GoldenEye and Galore escape the Lair in Galore's helicopter, while Scaramanga and Number One (Ernst Stavro Blofeld) later discuss their next move regarding GoldenEye, deciding to observe his actions before taking further steps.
