Grid Runner is a futuristic take on the game of "tag." When on the offensive, your goal is to gather flags scattered throughout the levels while avoiding being tagged or eliminated. On defense, your mission is to tag the opposing player—whether it's the AI or a friend in two-player mode—before they manage to collect all the flags. Throughout each level, you'll encounter various colored orbs that aid you in overcoming your foes. For instance, green orbs boost your speed, red ones enhance your magic, and blue ones improve your agility. The more power-ups you gather, the more effective you become in battle. You can also collect and utilize magic points. By collecting magic points, you gain the ability to perform one of six special actions: construct a temporary bridge, leave behind explosives, slow down your opponent, fire a weapon (which can be upgraded or exchanged), temporarily increase your speed, or teleport to safety.
Axxel, the main character, and his companion Tara, a duo of independent space explorers, are dispatched to the Gridonion Asteroid Field—a crucial route connecting Earth to the Nether-Planets—to uncover the cause behind the unexplained vanishing of vessels. While examining what appears to be an abandoned alien craft within the asteroid belt, Axxel is seized by the malevolent sorceress Empress Vorga, who compels him to participate in a lethal contest against her demonic underlings. Should the player overcome all 14 monstrous foes, Axxel faces off against Vorga in a final showdown. Victory results in the witch's destruction and Axxel's escape just as the ship is about to detonate.
