Summary
GuitarFreaks is a music-based video game series developed by Konami. It's a rhythm game in which players use a controller to mimic playing an electric guitar. The soundtrack primarily features rock, rock and roll, and J-pop music. The series is widely regarded as one of the most impactful games in history, having set the stage for later popular guitar rhythm games like the Guitar Hero franchise. Working Designs tried to introduce Guitar Freaks PlayStation 2 titles to the U.S. market, but legal issues surrounding the guitar controller halted the effort.
The series has now reached its nineteenth installment, GuitarFreaks V8, which launched on March 28, 2011. It was thought to be the last entry in the GuitarFreaks V line. A spin-off, GuitarFreaks XG, debuted in Japanese arcades on March 10, 2010, introducing two additional buttons on the fret bar. A follow-up, GuitarFreaks XG2, came out on March 9, 2011, and another, GuitarFreaks XG3, was released on February 23, 2012.
