Hellgate: London is set in 2038, 18 years after the outbreak of a devastating war: London has been overrun by demons from Hell. These relentless hellspawn have long sought a way to breach our world. Until recently, humanity had many defenders striving to keep the invasion at bay. The background of the Hellgate narrative weaves in real-world events as thwarted attempts at crossovers. The Crusades were actually waged to repel Hell’s forces, as was the burning of London during the Great Fire to eradicate a demonic plague. According to the game’s lore, the legendary Knights Templar were the guardians of the knowledge needed to combat these infernal threats. Tragically, these heroes suffered their own destruction at the hands of the power-hungry King Phillip IV, who resented their global influence. Though the Knights Templar endured as an order, their ranks were drastically reduced and they were forced into secrecy to survive.
