Herzog Zwei is a Sega Genesis-exclusive title developed by Technosoft and published in 1989 (launching in North America and Europe in early 1990). As one of the earliest real-time strategy games, it predates the genre-defining Dune II. Herzog Zwei blends the fast-paced action of Technosoft’s Thunder Force series with a straightforward, accessible layer of strategic gameplay. In Herzog Zwei, players take control of a flying, transformable mech—a versatile robot designed for both utility and combat. Using the mech, players acquire ground units, transport them across the battlefield, and issue commands. All strategic actions must be carried out through the mech itself. Units follow simple directives—such as patrol, defend, or seize a base—until they run out of fuel or are destroyed. Managing tactics, such as reassigning missions or repairing vehicles, requires significant hands-on control from the mech, making for a highly detailed and involved experience.
