Summary
Hokuto no Ken is a video game launched in Japan on July 20, 1986, by Sega for the Sega Mark III gaming system. It is a side-scrolling action title that mirrors the events of the first television series, following Kenshiro’s conflict with Shin and his crew through to his climactic battle with Raoh. The gameplay consists of scrolling levels where the player must progress toward the objective while overcoming waves of enemies and minor bosses, each culminating in a one-on-one showdown with the stage’s main antagonist. Although it shares gameplay similarities, this version is not connected to Toei’s Hokuto no Ken video game for the Family Computer, which came out a few months later. The lead programmer was Yuji Naka, who later gained fame for his contributions to the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Although Rei is shown on the box art, he does not appear in the actual game.
The original Mark III version was re-released alongside an enhanced remake in Sega Ages 2500 Hokuto no Ken for the PlayStation 2 in 2004. It was also made available for the Wii Virtual Console in Japan on February 26, 2008. A Western release for the Master System was titled Black Belt, which did not carry the Hokuto no Ken license and featured modified visuals as a result.
