Hype: The Time Quest

Summary
Hype: The Time Quest is an adventure video game created by Ubi Soft Montreal and published by Ubi Soft Entertainment. Launched in 1999 alongside Alex Builds His Farm (1999), it is based on the Playmobil medieval castle toy line. The U.S. version of the Game Boy Color edition was initially set for a June 2000 release but was postponed for more than a year for unknown reasons. The story follows Hype, a 22-year-old knight serving King Taskan IV, as he embarks on a time-traveling journey to return to his own time and rescue the kingdom from the sinister black knight Barnak. Directed by Alain Tascan, the game features thirty-two voice actors and original music composed by Robbi Finkel.
Storyline
The tale unfolds during the rule of King Taskan IV, in the aftermath of a brutal civil war. Hype, the kingdom’s greatest hero, is honored for his unwavering loyalty and bravery with the presentation of the mighty Sword of Peace. But during the ceremony, a sudden and shocking event occurs: a mysterious black knight, mounted on a dragon, bursts into the hall and demands the throne from the King. Without hesitation, Hype steps forward to challenge the intruder, but the knight is far too powerful. Using dark magic, he transforms Hype into a stone statue and sends him hurtling two hundred years into the past. In this earlier time, Hype’s statue is discovered in the courtyard of Gogoud, a young and ambitious apprentice magician. After many failed attempts, Gogoud manages to bring Hype back to life. As Hype regains his memories, he recounts his battle with the black knight, Barnak, and his urgent need to return to his own time to protect the King, avenge his defeat, and marry his beloved, Vibe. Though Gogoud is still inexperienced in magic, he agrees to assist Hype on his perilous journey through time. To return to the future, Hype must gather a series of powerful jewels. Each jewel allows only a single leap forward in time, meaning he must collect and charge them from the eras of Taskan I, II, and III before reaching Taskan IV. Along the way, Hype is joined by loyal allies such as Zatila the dragon, Karon the brigand leader, his daughter Nohlin, and others. But he also faces formidable enemies: King Taskan I and his followers, Rajoth the founder of the Laboratories, Enost the traitorous wizard of Taskan III, Barnak’s Black Guards, the monstrous dragon Vhoid, and finally Barnak himself. Hype also battles various non-human foes, including wolves, specters, bats, and a fearsome three-headed dragon. Hype’s journey spans the same kingdom across different ages, as rivalries and conflicts flare between the fortress, the monastery, the brigands, and the magicians of the Laboratories. When Hype finally returns to his time, he is reunited with Vibe, and together they rally an army to rise against Barnak, who now rules the kingdom with an iron fist. Under Barnak’s tyrannical rule, the people are forced to worship him as both a god and a king. The kingdom is under constant watch by Barnak’s minions, with key locations like the Town of Torras, the Forest, Gogoud’s Manor, the Brigand Village, and the Fortress heavily guarded. Meanwhile, the Monastery, Laboratories, and Field of Courage are sealed off by Barnak’s decree. The land suffers under Barnak’s dark influence, with the sky burning red as a sign of his impending victory, bringing sorrow to the people. But hope is not lost. When Hype defeats the Black Knight, the dark magic that had corrupted the land is broken, and the kingdom is restored to its former glory. As peace returns, the spirit of Gogoud shares tales of a new world, bringing the story to a hopeful and triumphant close.
