Gearbox Software handled the PC version of *James Bond 007: Nightfire*, while Eurocom was responsible for the home console edition. The games are largely identical, though the console versions omit driving segments and include a few minor tweaks to both single-player and multiplayer features.
The game's opening mission begins in Paris, France, where James Bond assists French Intelligence agent Dominique Paradis in evading a gang pursuit while chasing a truck carrying a stolen nuclear device. Bond joins the chase in his car. After preventing the truck from detonating the Eiffel Tower, Dominique and James enjoy New Year's Eve together. The British Government sends Bond on an undercover mission to a party at industrialist Raphael Drake's Austrian castle. M suspects the gathering is a cover for a missile guidance chip exchange between Drake and Alexander Mayhew, who oversees the Japanese branch of Drake's company, Phoenix International, and had previously stolen the chip from the U.S. Phoenix is thought to be a front for illegal arms trafficking. M instructs Bond to meet with CIA operative Zoe Nightshade and Dominique, who is posing as Drake's lover. As Zoe draws the guards' attention, Bond infiltrates the exchange and steals the chip. Nightshade and Bond attempt to flee via a cable car, but Drake's bodyguard, Rook, attacks with a rocket-equipped helicopter. Bond uses rockets hidden in the cable car to shoot down the attacker. James and Zoe then escape from Drake's forces in an armored snowmobile before continuing in Bond's car. They meet up with Q, who extracts them from Austria. Following the mission, Drake threatens to kill Mayhew if the operation fails. Mayhew contacts MI6, offering crucial information in exchange for Bond's help. At his Japanese estate, Mayhew is ambushed by Drake's men, including Japanese henchmen. Bond fights through the compound and retrieves a file from Mayhew's safe. As they prepare to leave, Mayhew is killed by a ninja. The file directs Bond to Mayhew's office at the Phoenix Building in Tokyo. Bond sneaks into the building during a guard shift change and acquires classified NightFire documents. He is then ambushed by Drake's men, but Dominique creates a distraction, allowing Bond to escape via parachute from the rooftop. The NightFire documents lead Bond to a nuclear power plant being decommissioned by Phoenix International. He gathers evidence of Drake's operations and escapes. However, he is betrayed and captured by Kiko, Mayhew's ex-bodyguard, and handed over to Drake. On the roof of the Phoenix building, Drake plans to kill Bond and Dominique, who has been exposed as a spy. Dominique is pushed off the rooftop and killed by Kiko. Bond escapes to the ground and is rescued by Australian Intelligence agent Alura McCall. M sends Bond and Alura to Drake's private island, where Drake has deployed a jamming signal. The two infiltrate the island and neutralize Drake's defenses. M informs Bond that UN, EU, and NATO forces are arriving to deal with the remaining hostiles. Bond reaches Drake's underground silo, defeats Kiko, and boards one of three space shuttles to intercept the Space Defense Platform. Kiko is killed in the shuttle's launch blast. Bond arrives at the U.S. Space Defense Platform, where Drake is waiting. He successfully diverts all eight missiles, saving countless lives, and causes Drake's laser weapon to fail, triggering a massive explosion. Bond kills Drake. As the station burns, Bond escapes in a pod and returns to Earth, where M reveals that astronomers worldwide are reporting "unexpected meteor showers"—in reality, the debris from the destroyed Space Defense Platform.
