Storyline

In a drunken haze, a bizarre, god-like being known as the King of All Cosmos obliterates every star, Earth's Moon, and other celestial objects in the universe—except for Earth itself. Though he realizes what he's done, the King tasks his tiny, 5-centimeter-tall son, the Prince, with traveling to Earth. He gives him a "katamari," a magical orb that lets anything smaller than it stick to it and grow larger, so the Prince can gather enough material to restore the stars and the Moon. The Prince succeeds, and the universe is set right once more. A parallel story follows the Hoshino family as the Prince carries out his mission. The father, an astronaut, is left stranded in space after the Moon is destroyed by the King. The daughter, named Michiru, has a special ability—she can sense the Prince's progress, feeling each constellation return to the sky. In the end, the family, along with their home and town, are swept up into the katamari used to rebuild the Moon.
