Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku-tachi is a vertical scrolling shooter developed by Cave and released in 2003.
In 2054, the world is thrown into turmoil as global warming finally takes its devastating toll on Earth: the polar ice caps rapidly disintegrate, triggering a chain of catastrophic events that submerge entire nations beneath the rising seas. The near-apocalyptic conditions and the dwindling resources of the few remaining habitable lands plunge the world into endless conflict, eventually leading to the outbreak of World War III. All attempts by the United Nations to halt the fighting are undermined by a seemingly endless flow of cutting-edge weaponry sold to all sides of every war. After a thorough investigation, the source is traced to EVAC Industry co. ltd, a ruthless arms dealer who has profited immensely from the chaos, often directly inciting violence with complete disregard for human life. Every effort to reason with the company's board has failed, as their profits have grown so vast that they've constructed their own cities, shipyards, defensive installations, and even a private airport, culminating in the formation of a private army of highly armed mercenaries. Unable to intervene openly, the UN assembles a covert strike team of four pilots, each pair assigned one of two advanced helicopters. Their mission is to stage a rebellion within EVAC's ranks and destroy the company's central facility, where research on a series of devastating war machines is underway. To ensure the operation remains hidden, the helicopters are equipped with stolen EVAC blueprints and bear the company's insignia and callsigns. No matter the outcome, the mission must never be linked to the United Nations. As a result, even in victory, the helicopters must be destroyed—and the pilots must be eliminated. In exchange for their sacrifice, the UN promises to grant each pilot a single wish, no matter the cost. And so, aboard a stolen EVAC transport plane, the story begins.
