Kichikuou Rance, which translates directly to "Brutal King Rance," is the seventh installment in Alicesoft's renowned Rance Series. It was launched in Japan on December 19, 1996. This title marked Alicesoft's first game developed for the Windows 95 platform, and it also introduced the company's new SYSTEM 35 engine, along with the territory conquest strategy gameplay that would appear in many of their later titles.
The story begins in the year LP0003, shortly after the events of Rance 4.2. Rance, the warrior, continues to be accompanied by his loyal slave Sill Plain, and has since settled into a life of banditry in northern Helman, having taken over as the leader of a gang after slaying their former boss as part of a mission assigned by the Keith Guild. Though Rance revels in the chaos and destruction that comes with his new role, Sill, burdened by guilt, fears that Rance is losing his last remnants of morality and is truly becoming a monster. During an assault on the city of Golak, Rance’s bandits draw the attention of Ruberan Tser, the commander of the Helman volunteer army, who retaliates by launching a surprise attack during the bandits’ second attempt to loot the city. Outmatched by a real military force, the bandits are swiftly defeated. Sill is captured by the Helman Army, and Rance is left with no choice but to escape for his life. Rance evades the Helman forces for several days, his strength and gear deteriorating with each passing moment, until he finally collapses from exhaustion near the border of Leazas and Helman. He is discovered on the brink of death by Kentou Kanami, the personal ninja of Leazas' queen and Rance’s longtime admirer, Lia Parapara Leazas, who carries him to Leazas Castle. After three days of rest, Rance awakens, deeply shamed by his humiliating loss and desperate to save Sill. He demands that Lia hand over the Leazas Army to crush the enemy nation. Seeing this as her chance to finally have Rance for herself, Lia agrees—but only if he marries her, a proposal he accepts with great reluctance. Now king of Leazas, Rance, already hardened by his time as a bandit leader and with his sense of right and wrong further eroded by Sill’s absence, quickly succumbs to the intoxication of power. His ambitions swell beyond merely defeating Helman and rescuing Sill, now encompassing a desire to conquer the entire world. On the day of his coronation, instead of delivering the speech prepared for him by Lia’s advisor, Maris Amaryllis, Rance boldly proclaims that every citizen must sacrifice their lives for his grand vision, instantly branding himself as a tyrant. The very next day, Ex Banquet, general of the Leazas White Corps, raises a rebel army composed of nearly half the nation’s military, with the sole purpose of deposing Rance. His world domination plans briefly derailed by the sudden rebellion, Rance swears to crush the insurgents without mercy. Thus begins the reign of the man who would be remembered in history as the ruthless king.
