Kidou Butouden G Gundam is based on the 1994 anime television series of the same name. As the first Gundam production not tied to the continuity of the 1979 original series, G Gundam introduces a world where international disputes are resolved annually through a grand tournament featuring Gundam mechs, each symbolizing the values (and clichés) of the country it represents. Naturally, this concept was transformed into a one-on-one fighting game. The game features 10 unique Gundams (one of which is unlockable via a hidden code), each with its own stage and background music. Four distinct game modes are available: Story Battle offers a limited selection of five Gundams (the members of the Shuffle Alliance from the series), challenging players to a series of nine matches against all other characters in the game. Each match is a single round. Versus Battle is designed for two-player action. Players pick their Gundam, its pilot (with different pilots offering varying stats in performance, defense, and speed), and the arena. Duplicates of the same Gundam (except the secret one) and pilot are allowed. Matches are best-of-three and can include handicaps for each player. Championship Battle is similar to Story Battle but uses best-of-three matches, allows full character selection, and omits story sequences. Team Battle is a two-player team-based mode. Players can choose one to five Gundams per team. One-round matches are played, with the losing Gundam being eliminated from the team until one team remains victorious. Controls use the four face buttons for light and heavy punches and kicks, while the two shoulder buttons enable quick forward or backward dashes. Each Gundam has special moves activated by specific input combinations, including powerful "desperation attacks" that can only be used when the Gundam's health bar is critically low and flashing red.
