Storyline
Soul Reaver 2 takes place in Nosgoth, a fictional realm infused with fantasy elements. In the first game of the series, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, the vampire Kain sets out to restore the Pillars of Nosgoth—nine mystical structures crucial to the land’s well-being, which have become corrupted. Guided by the cunning sorcerer Moebius, Kain is led to unknowingly destroy his own vampire kin, leaving him as the sole survivor. After restoring eight of the Pillars, Kain learns that the final one can only be healed by his own death. Choosing to preserve his race, he refuses to sacrifice himself, causing the Pillars to crumble and the world to fall into perpetual ruin, yet allowing him to endure and rebuild the vampire lineage. Centuries later, in Soul Reaver, Kain has become a tyrannical ruler, his vampires now in control of Nosgoth, while the land teeters on the edge of collapse. Beneath the surface, the Elder God, a god-like being, governs the cycle of rebirth and opposes the vampires’ unnatural immortality. In Soul Reaver, Raziel, Kain’s loyal lieutenant, is put to death by his former master, only to be revived by the Elder God and urged to seek vengeance. Journeying through the desolate landscape and slaying vampires, Raziel confronts Kain, who wields the Soul Reaver, a sword infused with a spirit that devours the souls of those it slays. When the blade shatters upon striking Raziel, its spirit fuses with his arm. Kain, motives unclear, lures Raziel through a portal into the past of Nosgoth. In Soul Reaver 2, it is revealed that in Nosgoth, fate is absolute—history is unchangeable, and every being is bound by destiny. Raziel, however, is an anomaly, his paradoxical existence allowing for the disruption of time and the alteration of events. Kain seeks to use Raziel’s free will to outmaneuver Moebius and resolve the conflict he faced in Blood Omen, with the ultimate goal of ensuring the survival of both the restored Pillars and the vampire race. The game begins with Raziel emerging from the time rift and encountering Moebius, now in a time 30 years before the events of Blood Omen. As the story unfolds, two additional time periods are explored—one 100 years after and another 500 years before the events of the first game.
