Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail!
Genres
Summary
Love for Sail! was the first Larry game since the third installment to continue directly from where its predecessor ended; in this case, Larry was dumped by the woman who had been the ultimate goal in Larry 6, Shamara. The structure followed the familiar pattern of earlier games: the "twist" was that Larry was a passenger on a cruise ship filled with parodies of well-known celebrities. Among the other cruise passengers were "Drew Baringmore" (Drew Barrymore), "Dewmi Moore" (Demi Moore), "Victorian Principles" (Victoria Principal), "Jamie Lee Coitus" (Jamie Lee Curtis), "Nailmi" and "Wydoncha Jugg" (Naomi and Wynonna Judd), and "Annette Boning" (Annette Bening). Numerous other pop culture icons were also parodied in the background, including the Archie Comics characters playing nude volleyball, multiple versions of James Bond in the ship's casino (a nod to Peter Sellers's famous Casino Royale send-up), a Sierra employee dressed as Sailor Moon, and porn star Ron Jeremy walking around in the buff. Most of the male supporting characters (Peter the Purser, Johnson the bartender, Dick the wardrobe attendant, Wang the galley server, Bob Bitt the artist) were named after common euphemisms for the male anatomy or were somehow connected to it. For example, Bob Bitt is named after John Wayne Bobbitt, and the character also shares a first name and a vague resemblance to the painter Bob Ross.
Storyline
The story centers on Larry's effort to win a weekly competition aboard the ship hosted by Captain Thygh, a striking blonde. The contest features a range of activities, from genuine sports like bowling to more risqué challenges such as a device designed to measure one's sexual ability. Every passenger receives a scorecard listing the various events they can participate in, and the passenger with the highest total score at week's end is declared the winner. The reward is an extra free week on the cruise, spent in the Captain's cabin (and likely her bed). The player must devise multiple cheating strategies for each of Larry's assigned events to secure the top score and claim victory. Larry's selected challenges include a cooking competition, a "best dressed" contest, horseshoes, bowling, the sexual prowess test, and more. Occasionally, Larry triumphs not through cheating but due to a surprising twist of fate caused by his (often unintended) actions. For example, a run-in with fashion designer Jamie Lee Coitus turns Larry's Leisure Suit into the latest style trend, earning him the best dressed title. Much like *Leisure Suit Larry 5: Passionate Patti Does a Little Undercover Work*, the game ensures that no decision will put the player in an "unwinnable" situation.
