Liberator is often seen as the reverse of Missile Command. In Missile Command, players aim to protect their bases from an attack coming from space. In Liberator, the goal is precisely the opposite: to attack and destroy enemy bases while orbiting their planet. Developed by Atari and released in 1982, the arcade version of Liberator didn't gain much popularity, with only 762 arcade units ever produced.
The story "Code Name: Liberator" outlines the premise of the arcade game in full and was featured as a special insert in two comic books with January 1983 cover dates. The characters and ideas from the comic appear throughout the game. On the arcade game's opening screen, Commander Champion of the "Atari Force" requests the player's help in rescuing the galaxy from the wicked Malaglon Army.
