Summary

Lode Runner: The Legend Returns is a 1994 revival of the original Lode Runner video game. The action unfolds in a single-screen environment filled with various features like terrain, ladders, gold, objects, and enemies. The objective is to gather all the gold, stay clear of the monks, and make it to the exit. The game comes with a level editor that lets players combine multiple levels into a single set and switch between different tile styles. The editor also allows setting the level to night or day mode and changing the background music independently of the tile set.

Storyline

The main character is named Jake Peril and is dressed in a gray suit, though a second player can take control of his partner, Wes Reckless (who wears a blue suit), in co-op levels and competitive hotseat mode. The robots from the original game are skeletal "mad monks" clad in red robes. According to the game's manual, Jake, and optionally Wes, journey into mysterious underground realms in search of the countless golden treasures scattered throughout the levels. At the game's conclusion, Jake is shown in the Technological world calling for an elevator to the surface, waiting eagerly as the credits play. The elevator arrives but breaks down, forcing Jake to climb the presumably long staircase to reach the surface.
