Summary
Mace: The Dark Age is a combat video game developed by Atari for arcade systems in 1997 and later adapted by Midway for the Nintendo 64 in the same year. The game shares similarities with Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. and the Mortal Kombat franchise. Much like Mortal Kombat, if a character wins both rounds, they can carry out a finishing move on their opponent. These moves include amputating limbs and the torso (Al Rashid), decapitation (The Executioner), repeated stabbings (Koyasha), impaling with a blade (Lord Deimos), breaking an opponent's spine by lifting them onto a Viking helmet and dropping them, causing their body to burst (Ragnar), and other more imaginative techniques such as extracting an opponent's heart (Xiao Long), shrinking them (Namira), turning them into a chicken (Taria), and invading their body to explode from within (Dregan). Note: The game draws heavily from the arcade title Soul Edge (1995), the first in the Souls series. Soul Edge itself was inspired by the foundational framework of WeaponLord (1995). Visual Concepts, the creators of WeaponLord, would send development builds of the game to Namco, the publisher of WeaponLord, for testing.
