In Märchen Maze ("Märchen" means "fairytale" in German), the player assumes the role of a young girl named Alice who is lured into a magical realm by a white rabbit. The game was first released on the Arcade before being brought to the PC Engine and the Sharp X68000. It later joined the Japanese Wii's Virtual Console in 2009. The Arcade and Sharp X68000 versions feature an isometric perspective, while the PC Engine version uses a standard top-down view. All the platforms in the game float above an endless abyss. Alice can launch bubbles, known as "shabon balls," at enemies to either push them off the floating terrain or destroy them. Pressing and holding the attack button charges the bubble, making it bigger and increasing its knockback power or damage output, depending on the target. Enemies also attempt to push Alice off the platforms. In fact, Alice doesn’t take damage in the traditional sense—losing a life only happens if she falls into the void. Alice has a set of balloons that can save her from a fall if needed. She can jump to dodge obstacles, enemy fire, or leap across gaps in the terrain. Each stage ends with a boss battle; Alice must reach the end and defeat the boss within 180 seconds, or "time over" creatures will appear and attack her. The PC Engine version of the game does not include a time limit.
