Summary
Mari0 is a fan-created video game that merges the gameplay of Super Mario Bros and Portal. It was developed by Maurice Guégan of Stabyourself.net, who has also worked on humorous games like Not Tetris. Mari0 was built using the LÖVE framework and is compatible across multiple platforms. The game was made available on March 3, 2012, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux under a Creative Commons license (BY-NC-SA), with the source code also being freely downloadable.
The main gameplay of Mari0 is based on the 8-bit 2D platforming of Super Mario Bros, where the player uses the keyboard to control Mario, running and leaping through levels, dodging or stomping enemies to overcome them, while gathering coins to increase their score. The game introduces the "portal gun" from the Portal series, allowing the player to click with the mouse on two distinct surfaces within a level to create a portal connecting them. This mechanic opens up various gameplay possibilities, such as using vertical speed when entering one portal to launch Mario horizontally from the other, with similar effects on enemies and other in-game elements.
The game features level designs from the original Super Mario Bros, as well as test chambers inspired by Aperture Science from Portal. A level editor, along with various graphic sets and shaders, is included to help players create new content. The game supports up to four players in cooperative play, with online multiplayer planned for a future update.
