Mario Is Missing! is an educational title and marks the first time Luigi takes center stage as the main character, with Mario playing a supporting role. The core gameplay involves navigating a city in a side-scrolling format, leaping on Koopas to retrieve stolen artifacts. Once collected, Luigi must restore order by returning each artifact to its proper location and correctly answering two questions about the landmark. The computer version follows a point-and-click adventure format, whereas the NES and SNES editions focus more on platforming elements.
Bowser, ruler of the Koopas, has moved from the Mushroom Kingdom to the real world, establishing his base in a castle located in Antarctica. He intends to steal Earth's valuable treasures using the Passcode-Operated Remote Transportation and Larceny System, a device that enables his Koopas to teleport globally. His primary goal is to sell these treasures to fund the purchase of numerous hairdryers, which he hopes will melt the Antarctic ice. To stop Mario from interfering with his scheme, Bowser captures him, leaving it to Mario's brother, Luigi, to rescue him.
