Summary

Mario Super Sluggers, the follow-up to Mario Superstar Baseball, keeps the fun, arcade-style action of Mario's sports titles. Mario and his pals are invited to the Baseball Kingdom to face off in some friendly competition. But when Bowser finds out, he crashes the event without hesitation. Multiple game modes return, just like in the earlier title. Exhibition mode lets players take on each other in a single match, with customizable options like the number of innings, whether captains can use their unique star powers (each has a special star swing and pitch), and whether error items are active (error items can be tossed at fielders to disrupt their play). The single-player Challenge mode has a new twist. This time, players begin with Mario, who must gather a team to battle Bowser Jr. and eventually Bowser. Teammates aren't earned through gameplay but are only recruited by completing specific objectives. Most of the adventure is viewed from an overhead perspective, with each area centered around a team captain. Each captain has a unique ability to help Mario find allies and collect coins, which are used to purchase helpful items for the journey or for matches against Bowser Jr. and later Bowser. Additional coins can be earned through minigames. Toy Field mode has been slightly reworked from its appearance in Mario Superstar Baseball. As in the GameCube version, players take turns batting to score points, with a turn awarded to whoever grabs and holds the ball after a set time. However, unlike before, fielders can now fight to steal the ball from whoever is holding it. Batters can also throw items at fielders to make them drop the ball, giving the batter another chance to swing.

Storyline

The narrative unfolds within the challenge mode of the game. Mario and his companions head to Baseball Kingdom for a break and to enjoy a game of baseball, but their plans are interrupted when Bowser Jr. shows up and disrupts the peace. To restore order, Mario must explore the island and venture through its distinct and specialized zones to recruit various characters and team captains for a showdown against Bowser Jr. in a baseball match. After Bowser Jr. is bested, he withdraws, only for Bowser himself to arrive and challenge Mario's squad, aiming to seize control of the island. When Mario's team defeats Bowser, they celebrate with a grand party. Surprisingly, Bowser and Bowser Jr. are welcomed to the festivities, and in a twist, Bowser ends up rescuing Mario from a prank set by Wario and Waluigi.
