MediEvil is a contemporary re-creation of the 1998 action-adventure title MediEvil. Created by Other Ocean Emeryville and released by Sony Interactive Entertainment, it launched exclusively on PlayStation 4 on October 25, 2019. The game continues the original's storyline, following Sir Daniel Fortesque, a resurrected bone knight tasked with defeating the wicked sorcerer Zarok and rescuing the realm of Gallowmere. The remake includes entirely refreshed visuals, modernized controls, and newly recorded audio, while keeping the signature gameplay, humor, and dark, gothic style that made the original a classic.
In the year 1286, a dark sorcerer named Zarok sought to conquer the kingdom of Gallowmere with his army of the dead. According to legend, the king's champion, Sir Daniel Fortesque, led the charge against Zarok and, after a fierce battle, struck the final blow before succumbing to his injuries. In truth, Dan was felled by the very first arrow of the conflict, and the king, to preserve the kingdom's morale, declared Dan the "Hero of Gallowmere" and concealed the real outcome. Meanwhile, Zarok was driven into hiding and believed to be dead. A century later, in 1386, Zarok returns, casting a dark spell over Gallowmere to awaken his undead forces and siphon the souls of the living. In the process, he inadvertently brings Dan back to life, now a skeletal figure missing his jaw and the eye lost in the battle. Denied entry to the Hall of Heroes due to his past failures, Dan seizes this chance to confront Zarok, save Gallowmere, and prove himself a true hero. As Dan journeys through Gallowmere, battling waves of undead and facing all manner of creatures, he reaches Zarok's stronghold. Using the souls of his fallen comrades, gathered through the Chalices, he fends off Zarok's skeletal legions. After defeating Zarok's champion, Lord Kardok, Zarok transforms into a monstrous form, but Dan emerges victorious. As Zarok breathes his last, he triggers a collapse of his lair. Dan escapes just in time, breaking Zarok's dark hold on the land, returning souls to the living, and laying the dead to rest. With the magic that bound him fading, Dan returns to his tomb and once again falls into eternal sleep. If the player has collected all the Chalices, Dan is granted entry into the Hall of Heroes, finally recognized as the true Hero of Gallowmere.
