
Mega Man X: Command Mission, referred to as Rockman X Command Mission in Japan, is a side entry in the Mega Man X franchise. It launched in 2004 for the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube, marking it as the second final title in the Mega Man X series. What sets it apart from the rest of the series is its RPG format, featuring tactical turn-based battles and a deep narrative. Its gameplay bears a resemblance to Capcom's iconic Breath of Fire series in several aspects, thanks to the overlapping development team. In terms of timeline, it is the Mega Man X title set farthest ahead in the future, occurring in the 23rd century (22XX era), and it unfolds in a separate timeline outside the main Mega Man storyline. The GameCube edition allows connectivity with the Game Boy Advance, enabling players to use the GBA as a tool for treasure hunting. Meanwhile, the PS2 version includes a demo for Mega Man X8.
Prologue In the year 22XX AD, a strange mineral called Force Metal was discovered in the remnants of a meteor that crashed into the Pacific Ocean. Technological advancements based on this metal transformed Reploid engineering. The Federation constructed Giga City, an artificial island, near the meteor’s impact zone to mine and refine Force Metal. All seemed to proceed smoothly until a group of rogue Reploids armed themselves and launched a rebellion on the island. They expelled all humans and demanded the government recognize Giga City as an autonomous Reploid state. This new rebel force and its leader, Epsilon, were swiftly labeled Mavericks for their actions. After the initial team of Maverick Hunters was either destroyed or incapacitated by the Rebellion Army, Colonel Redips deployed a specialized unit consisting of X, Zero, and Shadow. If they failed their mission—to capture Epsilon and end the Reploid uprising—the Federation would have no option but to declare total war on Giga City and the Rebellion Army. Chapter 1: Infiltrate Giga City! X, Zero, and Shadow arrive at the edge of Giga City to investigate an energy signal coming from the Lagrano Ruins. A sudden explosion separates the trio, but they press on toward the ruins’ summit. X and Zero reunite near the top, only to be ambushed by Hippopressor, which they quickly defeat. Reaching the rooftop, X and Zero find Shadow confronting Epsilon. As they attempt to apprehend Epsilon, Shadow betrays them, revealing his true loyalty to the Rebellion Army. The rebel commanders—Scarface, Botos, and Ferham—emerge, and the Hunters realize they’ve walked into a trap. Zero tries to strike Epsilon but is overpowered and thrown back by the commanders’ attacks. Left alone, X has no choice but to retreat, leaping from the rooftop into a deep chasm below. Ferham begins to pursue, but Epsilon halts her, confident that X will return.
