Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - HD Edition offers an enhanced 720p resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio, delivering a sharper and broader perspective than the original 480p resolution and 4:3 format of the PlayStation 2 release. Players can now watch cutscenes in full-screen or letterboxed mode, and online achievements and trophies have been included. The HD Edition also incorporates much of the extra content from Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, such as the Missions and Snake Tales game modes, though the Skateboarding mini-game from the PlayStation 2 version of Substance is not present.
