Summary

As part of the Metroid series, the game introduces gameplay in both first- and third-person perspectives and marks the first entry in the franchise to include melee attacks, which can only be performed when an enemy’s health is lowered to a specific threshold. The title places a strong emphasis on story and character development, incorporating numerous cinematic sequences and voice performances. In standard gameplay, players use a third-person perspective, controlling Samus by holding the Wii Remote horizontally. She can jump, fire her arm cannon, and transform into a morph ball, which enables her to roll through tight spaces and deploy energy bombs. While the core mechanics resemble earlier Metroid games, the environments are fully three-dimensional, allowing for more dynamic movement beyond a flat plane. Other M is the first in the series to introduce a melee combat system. By timing button presses correctly, players can perform special moves like the Sense Move, which lets them evade enemy strikes, and the Overblast, where Samus leaps onto an enemy and delivers a powerful close-range shot. When the Wii Remote is aimed at the screen, the view shifts to first-person, allowing players to lock onto enemies and launch missiles, though movement is disabled in this mode. The game frequently requires switching between these perspectives—for instance, using third-person to battle swarms of airborne foes while switching to first-person to target their spawning locations. The first-person mode is also utilized during exploration, such as when searching for concealed items.

Storyline

Within the Metroid series' fictional timeline, Other M takes place between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion. The game follows bounty hunter Samus Aran as she explores an abandoned space station alongside a Galactic Federation squad, which includes her former commander, Adam Malkovich.
