Summary
Minnesota Fats: Pool Legend (known in Japan as Side Pocket 2) is a pocket billiards video game developed for the Sega Genesis and Sega Saturn, featuring legendary pool player Rudolf "Minnesota Fats" Wanderone. It serves as a follow-up to Data East's earlier hit, Side Pocket. The game's goal is to journey through various cities and overcome AI-controlled opponents. Players can also compete against another person to test their skills at the pool table. Players can engage in a story-driven campaign and challenge a lineup of professional players in six distinct pool halls, with the ultimate goal of facing off against Minnesota Fats. The game offers seven different pool variations: Eight-Ball, Nine-Ball, Rotation, 14-1 rack, Three Ball, Cut Throat, and One Pocket. It also includes a Versus Mode, allowing players to challenge any opponent they choose, including a two-player option for local matches, and a Tournament Mode. Additionally, there's a Trick Mode where players can attempt 16 unique trick shots. The Saturn edition plays similarly to the Genesis version but adds a training mode, a brief documentary on Minnesota Fats, and a completely new storyline in the story mode. In the Genesis version, players assume the role of an unnamed rookie aiming to challenge Minnesota Fats, with computer-animated cutscenes. The Saturn version, however, casts the player as Minnesota Fats himself, as he travels across the U.S. to face fictional pool hustlers, using live-action full-motion videos (FMVs) for the cutscenes. In Japan, the title Side Pocket 2 is exclusive to the Saturn version, while the Genesis version keeps the original title, Minnesota Fats: Pool Legend.
