Known as "Monster Hunter Portable" in Japan, Monster Hunter Freedom is essentially a PSP adaptation of the expansion to the original game, Monster Hunter G. As a result, it includes very similar content, restructured for a portable gaming experience. Monster Hunter Portable does not include Minegarde Town from Monster Hunter and Monster Hunter G, and instead emphasizes local multiplayer over online play. Because of this, the game was entirely rebalanced to be more accommodating for single players. The game introduces one entirely new monster not seen in the series before, Yian Garuga. The gameplay centers on completing quests and collecting materials to enhance your gear and progress. The rarer the items and equipment, the more powerful the character's physical abilities become. Unlike many hack 'n' slash titles, this game demands strategy and skill to defeat massive monsters, rather than relying solely on brute strength. Players have access to a wide variety of weapons, including sword and shield, great sword, dual swords, hammer, lance, bowgun, and the heavy bowgun. Each weapon requires specific items to craft, which are obtained by finishing quests and gathering loot either from monster carvings or found in the environment.
