Summary
Monster Max is an isometric action-adventure game created by Rare and released by Titus Software for the Game Boy portable gaming system. It hit European shelves in December 1994 and arrived in the U.S. in January 1995. Developed by Jon Ritman and Bernie Drummond, the game shares a striking resemblance to their 1987 classic, Head over Heels, in both visual style and gameplay mechanics. Despite strong critical acclaim, the title did not achieve strong sales.
Storyline
Monster Max is a solo adventure game viewed from an isometric angle, much like Ultimate's Knight Lore. Players take control of Max, the main character and a rock guitarist, as he battles the evil antagonist Krond, who seeks to outlaw music worldwide. The game consists of 29 levels, each featuring various challenges the player must overcome to advance, including puzzle-solving, leaping over barriers, collecting items, and defeating foes. Each level also includes useful tools like bombs, which can be used both to attack and unlock hidden or blocked areas, a bag for carrying and dropping items, and a force shield that guards against enemy attacks, among other items. After finishing a level, players earn a set amount of credits, which unlock new sections of the game's main world, known as the Mega Hero Academy.
