Monster Rancher Advance is a monster-breeding simulation that lets players raise and customize 440 different monster types. These creatures can be tested in in-game tournaments or pitted against each other in two-player mode using the GBA link cable. Monsters are created at the game's shrine by entering letters, numbers, and punctuation symbols. Players start by entering up to four characters to create monsters, and can unlock the ability to use up to eight characters by advancing in trainer rank. Different words or character combinations can result in a variety of monster types, each with unique attributes and traits. Training involves selecting the right foods, choosing drills to improve stats, sending monsters to training sessions to learn new attacks, and giving them items. The game begins with a limited amount of money for buying food and items, with more earned through tournament victories. Gameplay centers on planning training, acquiring new attacks, managing finances, and striving to win tournaments. As monsters age, they can join the coaching staff to help raise new monsters with improved stats, or they can be combined to produce stronger offspring. While monsters don't die in the game, they do reach a mandatory retirement age. A storyline is present, featuring returning characters from previous Monster Rancher titles and introducing new ones. Like most Monster Rancher games, the gameplay is open-ended. The two-player mode, which requires the link cable and two game copies, lets players battle their monsters against each other. It also enables trading of items and cash, wagering on tournaments, and exchanging raised monsters between game files.
