Summary

Mother 1+2 is a collection featuring the first two games in the Mother series: MOTHER and MOTHER 2: GIYGAS STRIKES BACK! (which are known internationally as EarthBound Beginnings and EarthBound, respectively). MOTHER follows Ninten, a 12-year-old boy who travels the globe, utilizing his psychic abilities to gather eight melodies in an effort to save the Earth from a sinister alien species that controls minds. MOTHER 2 centers on Ness, a young hero who also embarks on a worldwide adventure, using his psychic powers to collect eight melodies and prevent an all-consuming evil alien from plunging the future—and all of existence—into endless darkness. The version of MOTHER included in this set features a special item that allows players to adjust the game's difficulty by reducing random encounters and altering enemy stats.

Storyline

**Mother** *EarthBound Beginnings* follows the young Ninten as he draws upon his great-grandfather's research into psychic abilities to battle hostile, once-inanimate objects and other adversaries. His journey leads him to form new friendships and ultimately uncover a sinister alien scheme that needs to be thwarted. **Mother 2** The story begins when Ness is roused from sleep by a meteor crashing near his home. He immediately heads to the impact site, where he encounters a police barricade and Pokey Minch, his friend and neighbor, who urges him to return home. Later that night, Pokey once again wakes Ness, this time asking for help in locating his missing brother, Picky. They find Picky near the meteor, sleeping behind a tree, and wake him up. The trio then meets an alien insect named Buzz Buzz, who hails from a future ruled by the "universal cosmic destroyer," Giygas. Buzz Buzz recognizes Ness's immense potential and guides him on a quest to discover and document the melodies of eight "sanctuaries," allowing him to harness the power of the Earth and prepare for the ultimate battle against Giygas.
