Storyline

Exile takes place 10 years after the events of Riven, when the Stranger arrives at the home of Atrus and his wife, Catherine. Atrus is a scientist and adventurer who has mastered an ancient technique known as the Art: he can create connections to other worlds, called Ages, by writing special books. This power comes from an ancient civilization known as the D'ni, whose society collapsed after their city was ravaged by a deadly plague. Atrus invites the Stranger to his home to witness his latest Age, Releeshahn, which he has created as a sanctuary for the surviving D'ni. As Atrus prepares to travel to Releeshahn, a mysterious figure enters his study, takes the Releeshahn book, and leaves behind a different one. Pursuing the intruder, the Stranger arrives at J'nanin, an Age Atrus had written years earlier as a means to teach the Art to his sons. Due to the damage inflicted on the J'nanin book by the thief, Atrus is unable to join the Stranger on his journey.
