In the game, the player takes on the role of the wizard Illuminar, striving to build an army of trees to battle Tetragorn the Necromancer and his sinister forces who seek to conquer a graveyard. As an arcade action game, it stands out by featuring three unique gameplay segments, each influencing the next.
In the opening stage, Illuminar is positioned at the center of the screen. Steering the joystick controls his "wisp," a magical boomerang-like tool. Activating the fire button plants a seed that gradually matures through several stages into a full-grown tree. Ogres emerge from both sides of the screen, moving horizontally across it. If they step on an immature tree, it regresses one stage of growth, eventually vanishing. Spiders occasionally appear and wander the screen at random. If they pass over a mature tree, it becomes poisoned and will eventually die. Both enemies can be defeated by striking them with the wisp, which also has the ability to heal poisoned trees. Eye-Pods containing extra seeds occasionally appear and can be collected using the wisp. The pace of the action steadily intensifies throughout the level, becoming quite chaotic by the end. Each tree that survives the first level becomes an ally for Illuminar in the second. In this stage, the player navigates a five-level side-view map of a crypt teeming with spider eggs. Using the wisp, the player chooses trees and moves them onto coffins, where their roots extend into the ceiling and eventually break through to destroy the eggs beneath. If too much time passes, the eggs will hatch into spiders that attack the trees until the wisp eliminates them. Occasionally, the Hands of Fate drop from the ceiling, grabbing anything in their path and sometimes releasing rewards. The player must progress through the crypt while all this unfolds, collecting question-mark prizes to extend ladders and access deeper levels. In this level, joystick movement controls Illuminar, but holding the fire button halts him and shifts control to the wisp. The final showdown between Illuminar and Tetragorn occurs in a graveyard. Gravestones must be destroyed by stepping on them to prevent Tetragorn from appearing. Once he does—ensured by the presence of enough gravestones—he unleashes trails of fire that damage Illuminar as he moves. Any spider eggs that survived the crypt also transform into spiders that attack Illuminar. The wisp can be used to defeat either enemy, though Illuminar remains stationary while it is in use. Each enemy strike against Illuminar diminishes his power and ultimately leads to his defeat, though the occasional appearance of power rings can restore his health.
