Storyline

NEOTOKYO° is set roughly 30 to 40 years in the future, in a Japan beset by social and political turmoil as the pressures of a rapidly changing world take their toll. The Japanese government is under increasing strain from both external challenges—tensions in Asian geopolitics—and internal struggles—economic and societal instability. There is a growing movement within Japan to revive the nation’s former military might and global influence. A failed attempt to amend the Japanese Constitution to permit offensive military operations abroad sparks an attempted coup by factions within the Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF). Though the coup is thwarted, it nearly succeeded. In response, the Prime Minister establishes a covert unit within the Interior Ministry’s National Security Forces (NSF) known as GROUP SIX. Reporting directly to the Prime Minister, GROUP SIX is tasked with defending the Japanese Constitution at all costs. Almost immediately, they begin receiving intelligence about a splinter group within the GSDF Special Forces—JINRAI—planning a second coup. This group, known as Special Operations Group 43 (SOG43), is composed of hardline nationalists who believe Japan must reclaim its former strength and global dominance. This sets the stage for a clandestine war between the NSF and JINRAI.
