NFL 2K is a video game series centered on American football, developed by Visual Concepts and released by Sega. Inspired by the National Football League, the franchise initially launched as a title exclusive to Sega's Dreamcast console. As the flagship "2K" game, it laid the foundation for a broader line of athletic simulations, eventually leading to the creation of 2K Sports, a dedicated sports publishing division under the 2K brand. Following the end of the Dreamcast era, the series expanded to other sixth-generation platforms and emerged as the top rival to EA Sports' Madden NFL series. However, when the competitively priced NFL 2K5 significantly impacted the sales of that year's Madden title, EA secured an exclusivity agreement with the NFL, granting Madden NFL the sole right to feature real team and player names. After losing the NFL license, Visual Concepts briefly re-entered the football game market with All-Pro Football 2K8, a title that included appearances by former NFL athletes.
