NHL 13 is an ice hockey video game created by EA Canada and released by EA Sports. It marks the 22nd entry in the NHL series and hit shelves on September 11, 2012, in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. The title launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with Philadelphia Flyers forward Claude Giroux featured on the box art. The game was showcased at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2012 (E3 2012), held from June 5 to 7, 2012. A demo version became available on August 21–22, 2012, through Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Store. A fan vote determined which athlete would appear on the NHL 13 cover. Anyone was welcome to cast their ballot for the player they wanted to see on the box. Voting began on March 29, 2012, with 60 NHL athletes competing in a single-elimination format, two names per matchup, and concluded on June 4, tallying over 25 million votes globally. On June 20, Claude Giroux was announced as the winner, defeating Pekka Rinne at the 2012 NHL Awards in Las Vegas. In addition to the standard NHL 13 title, a special "Stanley Cup Collector's Edition" was also made available. This edition includes five random Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) player packs from the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals teams; a Gold Jumbo HUT pack featuring hockey legend Wayne Gretzky; and a boost pack with the CCM RBZ stick. As with NHL 12, the commentary team of Gary Thorne (play-by-play) and Bill Clement (color analyst) returned for NHL 13. For the first time ever, two real-life female athletes—Hayley Wickenheiser and Angela Ruggiero—were added as playable characters. In NHL 12, players could create custom female avatars, but no actual female players were included. On September 20, Gamesindustry.biz reported that NHL 13 achieved the highest first-week sales in the series' history.
