In NHL 2001, five main game modes are available: exhibition, season (where players guide a team through an entire season and take on the role of general manager), tournament (supporting up to 16 teams), playoffs (also featuring a 16-team format), and shootout (where gamers simulate the tie-breaking method used in international hockey). Outside of the season and playoff modes, NHL 2001 includes 18 international teams and four all-star teams for players to use. New additions to the game include the "Big Hit" and "Big Shot" buttons, which add a new layer of gameplay. Another new element is "The Momentum Meter," which influences a team's performance based on in-game momentum. Like the Madden Challenge found in EA's football game, NHL 2001 introduces NHL Challenge Mode. In this mode, players earn points for completing specific in-game objectives, and those points can be used to boost the skills of custom-created players.
