In 1990, Nintendo hosted a now-legendary video game competition known as the Nintendo World Championships as part of the Powerfest traveling gaming festival. Participants faced off in a triathlon featuring the NES games Super Mario Bros, Rad Racer, and Tetris. The ROMs used were specially modified for the event, and winners were decided based on cumulative scores across all three titles. Top finishers earned cash prizes and other rewards. Each finalist also received a personalized copy of the special ROM, stored on a standard NES cartridge. An even rarer version of the cartridge, with a golden hue reminiscent of the The Legend of Zelda cartridge, was exclusively given away as a prize in Nintendo Power Magazine. Today, both versions of the cartridge are among the rarest and most coveted video games ever made, often regarded as the holy grail of video game collectors. As of recent years, only 116 gray cartridges and 26 golden cartridges are known to have been produced.
