Summary
Nintendogs is a real-time pet simulation game created and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS portable gaming system. It was initially launched in Japan and later made available in North America, Australia, Europe, and other territories. The game originally came in three distinct versions: Dachshund & Friends, Lab & Friends (known as Shiba & Friends in Japan), and Chihuahua & Friends. It has since been reissued twice, first as a bundle with a special edition Nintendo DS featuring a new version called Nintendogs: Best Friends, and later as Nintendogs: Dalmatian & Friends. Nintendogs takes full advantage of the DS's touchscreen and built-in microphone. The touchscreen lets players interact with their dog by petting it and using various items that can be found or bought. These items include balls, frisbees, toys, and grooming tools to keep the dog content. The microphone is used to call the dog by its name, set at the start of the game, and to teach it tricks like "sit" or "roll over." Players can take their dogs for walks or to the park if they choose. Multiplayer interaction is possible through the DS's wireless connectivity. The game also uses the DS's internal clock and calendar to simulate the passage of time, affecting the dog's hunger and cleanliness levels. Nintendogs was widely praised by critics and earned an 85% score on Game Rankings. It received numerous accolades, including the 2006 Innovation Award from PC World and the Best Handheld Game award from the Associated Press. As of March 31, 2015, all versions of Nintendogs had sold 23.96 million units worldwide, placing it second on the Nintendo DS best-selling list, just behind New Super Mario Bros. The game's popularity led to the creation of related merchandise, such as Nintendogs toys and a line of Nintendogs trading cards. At E3 2010, it was announced that a sequel, Nintendogs + Cats, would be coming to the Nintendo 3DS.
