Ore no Shikabane wo Koete Yuke, which roughly translates to "Over My Dead Body," is a dungeon-crawling RPG in which players guide a family of warriors doomed to die young across multiple generations as they strive to vanquish the demon responsible for their curse. In addition to battle, players must manage the clan's resources and prepare the next generation to step up when the curse claims their predecessors. Taking place in ancient Japan, the game draws strong inspiration from traditional Japanese art and mythology.
Married warriors Orin and Genta launch a daring assault on Shutenkaku Castle to confront the oni lord Shutendoji, who endangers Kyoto and has kidnapped their children. Shutendoji slays Genta and their captured elder daughter, but Orin offers herself in exchange for the life of their remaining child. Shutendoji agrees, yet secretly imposes two curses on the child: a lifespan limited to two years and an inability to bear children with mortals. Alarmed by Shutendoji’s actions, the gods, led by Hiruko Taishoten, bestow blessings upon the child—granting them instant maturity and the right to have children with deities. Empowered by these gifts, the family embarks on a mission to stop Shutendoji, who is also corrupting earthbound gods throughout Japan. To assist them, Hiruko takes human form as a companion, while a spirit named Kitsuto appears as a self-appointed divine messenger. The family weakens Shutendoji’s grip across the land, then launch a final attack on Shutenkaku Castle and defeat the oni lord. It is revealed that Shutendoji is the cursed physical manifestation of Kitsuto, Hiruko’s twin brother born from a union between a human and a goddess. Bitter toward humans for the death of his family and the gods who imprisoned him as Shutendoji to contain his past violence, he plotted to free himself and torment Orin’s family—whose human form is his aunt. The family confronts Kitsuto, who has been using Orin’s captured power to create a demonic army and manipulate local gods. In their battle, Kitsuto fuses with Orin, forcing the family to kill both. Orin regains her divine form and carries Kitsuto—reborn as an infant—to heaven, where she will raise him among the gods. This act lifts the family’s curse.
