Players' pets could interact with one another through the "friend" system. A pet could visit the pets of the owner's friends and engage in various activities such as washing, grooming, or feeding. There was no daily limit on how many times a pet could visit other pets. On the first visit to each friend each day, players earned both coins and Paw Points, but only received Paw Points for additional visits. Ways to earn coins included entering the Daily Lottery, visiting friends, receiving awards, cleaning or playing with pets, winning hurdle races, or placing bets on hurdle race outcomes. Visiting friends, purchasing items, and using the stadium all contributed to earning Paw Points. Paw Points functioned similarly to XP or EXP in other social games; accumulating enough of them allowed a pet to level up. When a pet advanced a level, the player was rewarded with coins, new features, and special statuses. At launch, Pet Society featured 34 levels. In 2009, when houses were expanded to include 10 rooms, 13 more levels were introduced, raising the total to 47. By August 2010, the level cap was increased to 100. Certain items could only be purchased at specific levels.
