Summary

Storyline

A strange virus unearthed from thawing permafrost has captured the attention of the scientific world. It possesses an enormous genome, with only 1% of its genetic material matching known sequences in current databases. “What the hell are those other genes doing?” wonders researcher Jean-Michel Moreau. “This is like opening a Pandora’s box. What kinds of revelations will come from studying its contents?” The oceans begin to change into something utterly unfamiliar. Then the mutagens spread onto the land through a microbial mist carried by the air. The human population has been drastically reduced. Survivors take refuge in scattered, isolated sanctuaries across the globe. A handful of factions now dominate most of these safe zones and their resources, but they hold opposing beliefs and protect their deepest secrets. The Phoenix Project is a global organization created to be deployed in times of global crisis. You command one of its cells, assembling some of the world’s top scientists, engineers, and soldiers. When your cell is activated, you quickly discover that you have no contact with any other cells. You must uncover what has happened to them.
