Like its earlier titles, the game is a third-person shooter that lets players choose to play as either the Plants or the Zombies in both cooperative and competitive multiplayer settings. It introduces 20 customizable character classes, six of which are brand-new to the series, divided into three categories: attackers, defenders, and support. Each faction also includes a new team play class that enables players of the same class to merge into a powerful combined form during battles. Players can test their skills in a variety of competitive multiplayer modes, such as the goal-oriented Turf War and the team-based Team Vanquish deathmatch. The game also offers several player-versus-environment open areas where players can explore, collect items, and complete missions. Local split-screen multiplayer is supported across all game modes.
Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville continues the story following Garden Warfare 2. After presumably defeating the zombies in Zomburbia and sealing them inside a "Smell Jar," the plants regained control of Suburbia, allowing humans to live without fear of having their brains devoured—until the zombies found a way to break free. Now, the Plants and Zombies are once again locked in battle.
