Sayaka Kaori has slipped into a coma, but there is a way to reach her—through a device that allows people to enter dreams. Dreams are bizarre and unpredictable, often filled with peril. Only specialists from The National Public Safety Commission, famously known as Diamond Dogs, are permitted to venture inside. It falls to Ryo and Maria, two of the top Diamond Dog agents, to rescue Sayaka and bring her back to the waking world.
In the early 1980s, whispers start spreading about a new form of entertainment known as “D Movie,” offering users an immersive experience in a virtual reality world. As D Movies become more popular, a troubling trend arises: disillusioned youth begin to permanently retreat into the virtual realm, leaving their physical bodies to wither away. In response, Japan's National Public Safety Commission creates Public Security Division Four, informally called “Diamond Dog,” in 1984. The specialists who venture into the virtual world to carry out these recoveries are referred to as Debuggers. In 1992, a seventeen-year-old girl named Yūki Sayaka vanishes into “Story of the Ruined Capital,” a D Movie created by David Visconti. Three days go by before her absence is noticed, and due to her fragile health, she is given just twenty-four hours to live. Two Debuggers, Shijima Ryō and Tobari Maria, are sent in to save her before it's too late.
