R-Type Delta is a side-scrolling shooter video game that was exclusively released on the PlayStation. It serves as the fourth installment in the R-Type series—named after the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet—and marks the first entry in the franchise to feature fully 3D graphics.
It is the year 2163. The trans-dimensional combat unit R-9A Arrowhead has completed its mission to eradicate the darkness at the heart of the Bydo Empire. Severely damaged, it was recovered by the battle-cruiser Croque-Monsieur and transported back to Earth's orbital stronghold, Aegis. Astronomers in Central Asia observed unusual objects descending from space. As they neared Earth, the objects diminished in size and vanished from radar. Assuming them to be meteors, the scientists dismissed them without concern. Soon after, weapon systems in several cities began malfunctioning, and unusual thermal readings were picked up by observatories. Bydo interference led to the loss of control over the orbiting destruction platform, Moritz-G, which was then unleashed on the planet. Moritz-G descended upon a city in Asia, its world-ending power still dormant, but its defensive mechanisms have repelled all efforts to get close. A crisis military operation has been launched, and the prototype fighter R-9A2 Delta has been deployed with the assault team.
