Rage Racer is the third installment in the Ridge Racer racing game series. For the first time in the franchise, Rage Racer features an innovative single-player career system where players earn credits by winning races, which can then be used to purchase or upgrade vehicles.
Visually, the game adopts a distinct style compared to earlier PlayStation entries. It presents a more realistic look with a darker palette, drawing heavily from the arcade title *Rave Racer* in the *Ridge Racer* franchise. *Rage Racer* introduces a brand new, advanced single-player career system using credits, a first for the *Ridge Racer* series. Players earn credits by winning races, which can then be used to purchase and enhance vehicles. The racing is divided into five classes, labeled 'Class 1' to 'Class 5'. The main goal is to accumulate money (Credits, or 'eg'), which can be spent on acquiring new cars or upgrading existing ones. To advance to the next class, the player must finish in the top three in all events within a class. Each class allows three chances to secure a top-three finish. If the player wins all three races in a class using the appropriate grade of car (e.g., a Grade 1 car in Class 1), they earn the class's gold trophy. If not, they still move on to the next class. After completing the five 'Normal GP' events, the 'Extra GP' is unlocked, letting players race the same classes on reversed tracks. Completing the Normal GP also rewards the player with 999,999,999 e.g., more than enough to buy all cars and upgrade them to Grade 5. Upon finishing Class 5 in the Extra GP, Class 6 is unlocked, along with three 'secret' cars. Despite being part of the Extra GP, Class 6 races take place on the original track layouts. Class 6 only features four opponents, unlike the eleven in all other classes. There are four car manufacturers in *Rage Racer*, each emphasizing a different attribute, such as handling, acceleration, or speed. All the 'standard' cars can be upgraded, with the cost rising significantly between grades. This is the first game in the *Ridge Racer* series to allow players to race a truck, though it only has manual transmission.
