RailWorks, later known as Train Simulator, is a train simulation game developed by RailSimulator.com Ltd. It serves as the official follow-up to Rail Simulator and was made available online on June 12, 2009, with a retail release on July 3, 2009. In comparison to Rail Simulator, RailWorks introduced new train models, integrated tools that were previously downloadable separately, visual improvements such as updated content, bug corrections, backward compatibility, and the ability to exchange in-game items with other players online. The initial version of RailWorks included all five real-world routes from the original European and North American editions of Rail Simulator and added three fictional routes: a large freight yard in the UK, a route in the Alpine region, and a setting based in Denver, Colorado. It is a Steamworks title, meaning it relies on Steam for activation and to deliver essential game updates. Steam is also used to distribute additional routes and locomotives as downloadable content (DLC). Since its launch, the base game has received multiple free updates, including major releases such as RailWorks 2: Train Simulator in 2010, RailWorks 3: Train Simulator 2012 in 2011, Train Simulator 2013 in 2012, and Train Simulator 2014 in 2013.
