The Sega Saturn edition, launched in July 1997, introduced an unlockable battle mode where players must navigate through a sequence of rooms from the main game and defeat all enemies using selected weapons. It includes two enemies exclusive to this version: a zombified version of Wesker and a gold-hued Tyrant. At the end of the battle mode, the player receives a performance rating. The backgrounds were enhanced in this version to add more detail. The Japanese release is the most graphic across all platforms; after kicking a crawling zombie's head off, it stays on the ground, and in Plant 42, the character can be cut down before the game over screen appears; however, the live-action footage is censored in the U.S. version. This Saturn edition also includes unique enemy creatures, such as a re-skinned variant of Hunters called Ticks and a second Tyrant that appears before the final battle in Chris's campaign. Jill and Chris also receive exclusive costume options.
On July 24, 1998, a string of strange murders takes place on the outskirts of the fictional Midwestern town of Raccoon City, prompting the Raccoon City Police Department's S.T.A.R.S. unit to launch an investigation. When contact with Bravo Team is lost, Alpha Team is dispatched to determine their fate. Upon finding Bravo Team's downed helicopter, Alpha Team lands at the crash site and is immediately ambushed by a group of monstrous canines. As Alpha Team's pilot, Brad Vickers, panics and flies off alone, the remaining team members — Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Albert Wesker, and Barry Burton — are forced to take shelter in a nearby abandoned mansion. Depending on whether the player controls Chris or Jill, either Barry or Chris becomes separated during the pursuit and does not reach the mansion. The remaining team members then decide to explore the mansion in search of their missing comrade.
