Barbarian Invasion, the first expansion for Rome: Total War, moves the action 349 years ahead from the conclusion of the original game. Spanning from 363 AD to 476 AD (with the option for players to extend the timeline if desired), it captures the massive movements of Germanic and steppe tribes, including the Huns, while also modeling the religious conflicts of the era as Christianity, Zoroastrianism, and Paganism vie for supremacy.
Rome has expanded into an empire, evolving and dividing into the Eastern and Western Roman Empires, governed from Rome and Constantinople. The different regions of the Empire correspond to the factions from the original game, all now integrated into the imperial structure. The "Barbarians" in the title are embodied by the Huns, the Goths, the Vandals, the Franks, the Burgundians, and the Lombards, and it is their unification and growing power that enables them to launch invasions against the Empire, serving as the driving force behind the campaign's events.
