Sega Marine Fishing is a fishing-themed video game where players try to catch a variety of marine sport fish. The gameplay focuses on attracting fish to bite the lure and then skillfully battling and reeling them in. As players catch fish, they collect item cards. These cards can be used to obtain fish and artifacts for an aquarium, fishing gear, extra boats, and a range of quirky accessories like colorful shorts. The game includes two online modes: tournament fishing and "fish mail." In tournament fishing, players compete to catch the largest fish of a specific type. Fish mail allows players to write short messages, which can be received randomly when catching fish. Sega Marine Fishing is playable with the Dreamcast fishing rod controller. Players can personalize their characters with various outfits, including hats and shirts.
