Serious Sam 3: BFE is a first-person action shooter that pays homage to the golden era of the genre, where toughness was key, hiding was for wimps, and shooting was the only way to go. Acting as a prequel to the original game, *Serious Sam: The First Encounter*, *Serious Sam 3* is set during Earth's last desperate battle against Mental’s monstrous and mercenary forces.

Storyline

Before the year AD 2060, humanity had gradually begun unearthing relics and remnants left behind by the Sirians, a legendary race from the constellation of Sirius, long believed to be extinct. Unfortunately, this is when Mental turns his gaze toward Earth. He sends his vast armada across the stars, unleashing an endless wave of invaders to conquer the planet in a brutal three-year campaign that nearly wipes out the human race. In a desperate attempt to survive, the last remnants of humanity turn to the Time-Lock, a newly uncovered artifact said to allow one person to travel through time via an inter-dimensional gateway. Through this device, a single traveler could reach a critical moment in history and change the course of the past. But the Time-Lock remains inactive, and the survivors must first find a way to awaken it. Sam "Serious" Stone, a member of the Earth Defense Force, is deployed with a squad from Alpha Team to modern-day Egypt, now occupied by Mental’s alien forces. Their mission is to locate and extract Bravo Team, who are guarding Dr. Stein, a scientist in possession of hieroglyphics believed to hold the key to activating the Time-Lock. Sam’s mission goes awry when his helicopter is downed, and both teams are swiftly eliminated. Despite this, Sam manages to retrieve the hieroglyphics from Stein’s phone in the museum and sends them to command. Deciphering the symbols reveals the existence of a hidden Sirian chamber beneath the Great Pyramid. Sam fights his way through to a tunnel under the Sphinx and enters the Pyramid, where he not only finds the hidden chamber but also recovers vital data and a mysterious bracelet from the remains of what may have been Earth’s last Sirian. To power the Time-Lock, two massive but dormant plasma-energy generators must be reactivated. Hellfire from Charlie Team inserts Sam to bring both online. The process is slow and dangerous, but eventually, the generators come to life, and Charlie Team prepares to enter the Time-Lock. Sam is about to be extracted from Cairo when he is shot down once more and forced to run toward the lost ruins of Nubia. As he navigates through ancient tombs, he reconnects with Hellfire, who informs him that Mental’s forces have overwhelmed the human military and that she was killed just before the attack. Now driven by a singular purpose, Sam resolves to complete the Sirians’ mission himself and kill Mental in the past before he can destroy humanity in the present. He makes one final journey to the Hatshepsut Temple, where the Time-Lock is located. After a brutal battle, Sam defeats Ugh-Zan IV. With Ugh-Zan IV dead, the Time-Lock powers up, revealing an inter-dimensional portal to 3000 B.C., the time when the Sirians vanished. Sam calls Mental using Stein’s phone, only to be answered by Mental’s daughter, Judy. She tells him that Mental is planning to “moon” him. Sam sees the Moon hurtling toward Earth and, as it crashes down, he jumps through the Time-Lock to 3000 B.C., escaping the destruction of the planet.
